What is impedance?

Impedance is a speaker’s opposition to alternating current, measured in ohms (Ω).

In general, lower-impedance speakers draw more current from the amplifier, which can make them more demanding to drive. If an amplifier is not designed to handle that load, it may run hotter, distort, or enter protection mode to prevent damage.

This is why amplifier and receiver specifications often list different power ratings for 4, 6, and 8 ohm loads. In many cases, the 4 ohm rating is higher because the amplifier can deliver more power into a lower-impedance load — but only if it is designed to operate safely at 4 ohms.
